Moles

What are moles?

Moles or nevi are tan, brown, or black spots on the skin. Most adults have 20 to 30 moles. They first appear around 1 year of age, and we are constantly getting new ones. They do not fade and they last throughout our lives. In general, they are harmless.

When should I call my child's health care provider?

Call during office hours if:

  • You want the mole removed for cosmetic purposes.
  • The mole is pitch black AND your child was born with it.
  • The mole is growing rapidly in size.
  • The mole has bled or become an open sore.
  • The mole has changed colors (especially to red or blue).
  • The surface has become lumpy.
  • You have other questions or concerns.
